Being overtaken by the 2:20 pacer is a kind of classic race-going-wrong moment, but you responded perfectly and, as you say, managed a negative split despite a hilly second half. Sounds like you are ready to build on this. Perhaps the next event should be another half, rather than a full? Which could lead on nicely to a full distance in September... On the matter of gels, a casualty on the Brighton Marathon in 2013 was a young man who’d filled his belt with free samples from the marathon exhibition; as he went round he took, not one every half-hour, but one of each every half-hour.
