The Man In The Glass - Seafront Plodder - 26-10-2005 When you get what you want in your struggle for self And the world makes you king for a day, Just go to the mirror and look at yourself And see what that man has to say For it isn't your father or mother or wife Whose judgment upon you must pass The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life Is the one staring back from the glass You may be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum And think you're a wonderful guy. But the man in the glass says you're only a bum If you can't look him straight in the eye. He's the fellow to please - never mind all the rest, For he's with you clear to the end. And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test If the man in the glass is your friend. You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years And get pats on the back as you pass. But your final reward will be heartache and tears If you've cheated the man in the glass. BUT No, the man in the glass is a fraud and a cheat And he hasnt a clue where youre going, Its the face that each day all your colleagues must meet The disguise that you always keep showing. The man in the glass has no business to say Whether fortune and fame is your lot. Its the rest of the world who you meet every day Who will judge if youve made it or not. That face in the mirror cant tell you youre good Or youre bad, or youre somewhere between, Its judgement is flawed and its misunderstood With a habit of venting its spleen. You may tell him youre great; he may tell you the same And with confidence hold your heads high, Yet you know in your hearts that its only a game - That the others all know its a lie. When your paths at the end and your score is complete Then the man in the glass doesnt care. What goes in the book is what others repeat, For the man in the glass isnt there. The Man In The Glass - Sweder - 26-10-2005 The poem used by Duncan Fletcher and the England Cricket team to defeat the mighty Aussie this summer. I heard DF speaking about it on Sportsweek last Sunday. It's by Dale Wimbrow. Powerful stuff. |
