Well, I remember checking a box to this effect but it doesn't seem to work in any case (see bottom of forum). Maybe it was just for one particular sub-forum.
As to the general question, it's no big deal to me either way. I have wondered whether it's a a bit of an invasion of privacy. Though I think users can opt NOT to have their presence known by selecting "Use Invisible Mode" in User CP > Edit Options.
I'll leave it alone, and let users decide.
