Here's a couple of neat sites.

This one (http://www.sueandpaul.com/gmapPedometer/) gives you draggable maps and point and doubleclick way points which makes route measuring a doodle. It defaults to a US city but you can reset it for anywhere.

If you've got broadband, Google earth (a download from http://earth.google.com) is just brilliant fun. It's like having your own spy satellite. Resolution is very variable but it has a lot of neat features. No use for measuring your runs but you can tilt the images and view them in relief and "fly" up Loch Lomond and through other mountain passes.
