Running Goals - fjsnakeskin - 19-03-2004 Andy, You're exactly correct when it comes to goals. For years I considered myself a decent runner, and would frequently do hard trail runs upwards of 10 miles. But I would fluctuate between mediocrity and commitment. Then a friend challenged me to run my first marathon. I went from one goal to another and found renewed focus and direction in my running. From the first marathon, to dropping my half marathon time, then several attempts at a sub 4 marathon, etc. So I'd highly suggest you stick to those goals. The satisfaction of reaching them is a great reward, but the journey there is just as much, if not more, rewarding. My wife has tasked me with qualifying for Boston. At my age, I'd have to run a 3:10, which seems like a world away. I guess that's my 55th year goal...when it drops to a more reasonable 3:45...haha Running Goals - shelagh - 04-04-2004 Never say never, fj. I finally qualified on my 3rd marathon, and requalified last year in Boston, so am off to do it again. I would never have expected it. It is a great event and well worth working towards. Having said that, at your age you have great potential for improvement if you train wisely and work hard! I'm already old, and female so it was easier for me. At any rate, good luck. Running Goals - El Gordo - 05-04-2004 You're running Boston again, Shelagh? It must be coming up soon. Do let us know how you get on. Good luck. I can confidently state that I will never make it to Boston, but congratulations if you can - whatever your age. I have on e of Hal Higdon's paintings hanging in my hallway. I bought it from him when we went to Chicago. It shows Clarence Demar winning Boston for the 7th time. Perhaps I'll at least get over to spectate one day. FJS - you're right of course. Motivation and goals is what this game is all about. Unfortunately I'm not very good at hitting mine on my own, which is one of the reasons I just joined a running club. I decided that a bit of help was required, and some company on this journey. Most of the year I envy you Californians your climate, but we've now entered the one month of the year when I would want to be nowhere else than here. It's perfect running weather. Cheers Andy Running Goals - shelagh - 05-04-2004 That's funny, Andy. I too, have one of Hal's paintings. I believe it's called 4 Runners, and depicts 4 women running together. And yes, I'm doing Boston one more time. It's 2 weeks today. And although I'm not near as fit as last year, I'm looking forward to it (I think). |
