Recommending "free running shoes" (without even explaining what they are) to beginners may not be great advice though. And I have to say, for all the mind-clearing benefits of a long run, I tend not to think about much except... running. I guess that's it - my mind clears, it just doesn't fill with anything else. Music seems to distract parts of my mind, as running preoccupies motor function, unleashing a state of 'pure thought'.
