A Decent December - Mid Life Crisis Marathon Man - 09-12-2017 Here I am, a few kilos over my ideal weight and it's not even Christmas yet. Of course, it's the lack of running which is causing this surplus-of-weight crisis. What's to be done about it? Well, I could try that tricky new diet that requires consuming watercress smoothies before waking each morning, or perhaps take a course of Syrian acupuncture, but to be honest, the simplest solution would be to just lace up the Asics and go for a run occasionally. Well, to be even more honest, I did, in fact, go to bed four nights ago with that very intention for the following day. The result? I woke up with an incredibly sore lower back. I mean, what's going on here? I go to sleep perfectly fine and wake up a cripple. It took six ibuprofen tablets and half a tube of Voltaren gel just to get through the day. Oh well, it did at least steel my resolve to get "back" into it just as soon as I can. And so I shall. I've missed too many races and each email reminder to that effect is taking its toll. I have, however, been walking a lot in recent weeks, which has kept me healthy and reasonably lithe. It does not, however, serve to compensate for my (ahem) increased consumption of fine foods, wine, spirits and beers of late, and so to the running wardrobe I go. Hmm, those shorts that used to fall off me no longer seem to do so. They must have shrunk. And this bright red Nike running top that used to be like a tent on me is now, umm, a bit tight. Right, then. I get the message. Let's see what's to be done about it.
