Incidentally Tim, I've found a local race, the Compton Downland Challenge (rebranded for 2006 as the Fat Forty or something similar) that's a 40 mile trail race. I'm thinking about it....
Yep, same woman. She was 57 when she *started* this run, she's 59 now. I don't think she's trying to break any records. ;-)

If you do decide to do it, don't get hung up on it being further than you've ever run before, just think of it as a great way to go for a day's hiking where you can run the easy bits. Nobody's going to look down on you for walking the hills (and other bits if necessary) as that's the norm, not the exception. These events are much less about the times than the personal satisfaction of completing them.
