Helsby Half Marathon 2009
Is anyone doing this ? Properly called the Shell Four Villages Half Marathon, I regularly used to do this, but haven't done it for a few years now.
I've managed to get an entry, so am just wondering if there's anyone else out there doing it

I'm not even sure where Helsby is, to be honest. Presumably up your way? We have only one regular poster who lives in the NW though she's further south in Cheshire.

What sort of race is it?

Yes - it's up this way, actually in Cheshire. Official description (and I quote): A scenic road race through rural countryside passing through the Cheshire villages of Dunham on the Hill, Mouldsworth, Manley and Helsby. Accurately measured, 170m of climbing
It's ideal for anyone in Cheshire, Manchester or Merseyside, and is always oversubscribed - entries opened in mid-October, and reached the 2000 limit by the beginning of December

Hi R4R, and welcome to the forum.
Do you ever tangle with fell running up there? It's something I'm keen to get into next year having vowed to limit races to offroad in an effort to preserve ailing joints. Ideally something fairly short and gentle would be an ideal starting point.

The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph

Hi R4R. I'd like to also welcome you to the RC site.

No I'm not doing the Helsby Half Marathon - I'm another Southerner living close by to Mr Sweder!!

I'm thinking about heading to the Lake District in my van in the Summer - there must be some nice races up that way in August (fell or road). Anyone know of any??

I've done fell races in the past - but many years ago, so not sure of current situation. I know there is a Borrowdale fell race - last year was 2nd August. There is also a 'Lakeland Trails' series (with its own website), running from April to November, but nothing in August.

The Fell Runners Association website (www.fellrunner.org.uk) has links to races and affiliated clubs, but their calendar only goes up to Feb 2009

Well, I did it, without too many ill effects. This was my first half-marathon in 2 years - or possibly 3 - so I didn't know quite what to expect. Had a vague target of 8-min miling to get me round in 1:45. Ran the first couple of miles in 7:20 - 7:30 pace, but felt comfortable, so stuck with same group. Started to feel it at about 6 miles, but stuck in and went thru 8m in just under the hour.

Got hillier and windier, but tried to stick to 8-min miling to get me home in around 1:40. As it happened, long downhill stretch after 12 miles brought me in well under, so ended up with 1:38:43

Considering lack of training, well pleased with time, so looking for improvement at Blackpool, then 1:35 for Liverpool at end of March.

Who knows ? Maybe even sub 1:30 later in the year
