Possibly this issue of young people dropping dead during races is caused by too many people seeking fitness as a "head-in-the-sand" approach to underlying problems, i.e. fit people are sometimes prone to not getting themselves checked for congenital problems because they believe they are fit and well. In fact they are sometimes just fit, and their un-wellness is masked by their fitness which will often do nothing at all to stop a fatal episode, with a hard run perhaps being the catalyst if the problem is heart-related.
As I tell everyone who stands still long enough to listen: at the very least, know your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood-sugar levels. And have them checked regularly!
