Week 7
Week 7. 9th.14th March 2004. My weight is more or less the same, about 81,8 kilograms, which is quite good bearing in mind that I´m eating too much bread with olive oil every day but I like it so much.
I´ll try to follow Hal Higdon´s schedule as much as possible especially the long run. Fortunately, this week is “only” 12 miles since it is a step back week.

Tuesday. This afternoon/evening I felt better than last Sunday. I went out at 7 pm. It was a nice afternoon when I started but it was dark when I came back. I went from Almadrabillas park to the lighthouse. I went along the port to the lighthouse where I saw some anglers trying to fish. I don´t think they fish much there. It took me 24´55´´. I felt well although I still have some discomfort in my right foot sole. From the lighthouse there´s a beautiful view of the Alcazaba, which was illuminated, and the whole town and bay. Then, I came back to the starting point in 50´5´´. I tried to do it under 50 minutes but I couldn´t. I continued until minute 53 doing around 8 kilometres. I took some ice cubes to the shower to rub my right sole and other muscles and while I´m writing this I´m rubbing my right sole with a tennis ball. My physio advised me to use a very cold can but I haven´t tried yet.

Week 7
Friday. As you all probably know a terrible terrorist attacked happened yesterday in Madrid where about two hundred people were killed and many were injured. It was useless as all the terrorist attacks. It´s so sad to think all of us can be a terrorist objective, that all of them probably had expectations for the future, relatives, friends, classmates, work mates, etc who are left without them. Perhaps, there were some of them who were training to run their hometown marathon on 25th April. Well, life must go on. I wish terrorism will disappear one day but I find it difficult. As John Lennon said “Let´s give peace a chance”.

I went for a run this morning although I didn´t feel well either physically or emotionally. I´ve had a backache since Wednesday morning when I got up with big discomfort in my back, which made me walk with difficulty. However, the pain became smaller without having any medicines or physiotherapy. It´s the first time I´ve had a backache. Besides, I still have some discomfort in my right foot sole when I walk or run. I started at 6.40 a.m. The moon was in its half phase. The day was a bit cold and misty at sea in the background. I went slowly from Almadrabillas park along the sea front in 17´15´´ and went on to the dry river until minute 30 when I came back along the same way. In all, I did 60´15´´ and around 8 kilometres.

I saw a few runners and some people walking as a group of four retired men I usually see walking along the sea front and talking about the terrorist attack. That´s the topic in all the conversations in Spain today and yesterday. This evening at seven pm there´s a demonstration in all the cities and towns in Spain. Here in Almería it starts at my usual start and finish line, Almadrabillas park. I´ll be there as many others to protest against such a killing. This morning, at 12 pm, there were 15 minutes of silence in my school playground as in many other places in Spain. It was touching to see about 500 students from 12 to 18 years old, 40 teachers and 5 administrative and caretaking staff in silence for fifteen minutes in solidarity with the victims and against terrorism.

The news was shocking, Antonio, and I'm sure we all share your sense of anger and sadness at the futility and the wastefulness of such actions.

It will give your Madrid marathon much extra poignancy.

Thank you for your support, Andy. It´s a pity that Madrid has become so well-known for such terrible terrorist attack. By the way, the last news is that a few Islamic men have been arrested as terrorists´helpers.

Good luck at Bath half marathon. Take it easy. It must be very hard to take part in two half marathons in just seven days. I liked Bath a lot when I went there long time ago.

I like the photos you´re showing in your last entries. It´s beautiful landscape where you train.

Saludos desde Almería

It's nicer to run in black and white...

Thanks for your good wishes for Bath. I'm not going to overdo it

But when do I ever overdo it?

I'm increasingly thinking that I shouldn't bother too much about times. I really like taking part in these events, but the time it takes me has never seemed very important. I think until I join a running club (which I keep saying I'll do, but haven't yet), I'm not likely to improve. I'm not being defeatist, just realistic. Until then, I'm not going to worry too much about how long it takes.

I hope you can have a good run this weekend, and help to clear your mind of these recent events.

Regards

Andy

Yes, I think it´s better not to think about times although we always want to improve our last time. Tomorrow I should do 12 miles. I´ll try to do the course of almería half marathon and I´ll imagine I´m running with you and Griff in Bath. By the way, good luck to Griff and greetings to him as well.

It would be great to fix a half marathon in the UK where all the forumites could try to join so that we could meet and have lunch together after the half marathon.

Best wishes.

Saturday. Yesterday there were big demonstrations in all cities and towns in Spain. I went to the demo in Almería with my brother. There were about 140000 people. The population in Almería is around 160000 but there were people from other villages and towns near Almería. It was impressive especially because you could see a lot of teenagers with their hands painted in white and people with placards and banners such as “No al terrorismo” ( No terrorism ) or people shouting “Madrid, amigo, Almería está contigo” – ( Madrid, my friend, Almería is with you ), and so on.

This morning I went by car to the sea front just opposite the auditorium because I had to take my brother to the airport to take a plane to Madrid. I started at 8.30 am. It was a bit cold, 15º Celsius and it was drizzling. I started along the beach for nearly five minutes as far as the end of the first part of the promenade. Then I went along the sea front to my usual start point at Almadrabillas park. It´s interesting to do the same course but starting from a different point. Then, I went back towards the end of the sea front but went back to where the car was since I was in a bit of hurry to take my brother to the airport. I only did 40 minutes and around 6 kilometres.

I agree, though the main problem is that we live over a fairly wide area, so the logistics aren't that easy. Where is equidistant between Bristol, Almeria and Australia? I just had a quick look on a world map. Hmm. I reckon Northern China or Mongolia might be about in the middle. I wonder if there are still places available for the Ulan Bator Half Marathon?

I just looked it up on http://www.runtheplanet.com and it recommends getting in touch with...

"the Ulan Bator Hash House Harriers, which meets every Tuesday evening from April to September at 6:30 pm in front of the Bayangol hotel. The members of this Hash are not out to set word running records, but rather go out to have fun, get some excercise and enjoy the great scenery. Since much of Mongolia is covered in endless steppes and rolling hills, the entire country comes highly recommended for cross-country runners. The only caution goes out to the dogs guarding the "gers" (traditional tents in which Mongolians live). They tend to take a liking to the legs of strangers."

Some useful info to file away there.

Sunday. Carmen and Víctor took me to Costacabana where I started my long run at the sea front at 12.45 am. It was a wet day. It had drizzled a little before. It was a general elections and autonomous elections in Andalusia. I went along the promenade to take the road to the university and another sea front. Then, another road that takes to the promenade next to the beach in Almería. I saw a few runners and a lot of people walking. I decided to go on plodding along the beach for about one kilometre because it was difficult to run comfortably since there were many stalls and people strolling in that part of the sea front. I got to Almadrabillas park, where I usually start, in 62 minutes. Then, I took a one-minute break and continued to the lighthouse arriving there in 91 minutes. I took another walk break in minute 92 to continue towards a new pier that is being built where I was plodding for 15 minutes instead of going back since I thought I thought I wouldn´t be able to do 20 kms if I arrived at Almadrabillas park having to do do three more kilometres. Then, in minute 122 I took another walk break getting to my usual start point in minute 137. I continued along the sea front and some streets to do 146 minutes ( 2 hours 26 minutes ) and around 20 kilometres. I didn´t drink any water because I didn´t feel like carrying a strap with a pocket and a bottle of water but I wasn´t thirsty or hungry although I felt some discomfort in my right foot sole. By the way, according to the last vote counting there has been a landslide in favour of the partido socialista español, similar to the labour party. The last terrorist attack has probably had a great influence on this result since last week surveys gave partido popular, similar to the conservative party, the victory.

Summary of week 7 I should have done 29 miles - 46,4 kms but I´ve done 42 kms, which is not bad taking into account that I still have some discomfort in my right foot sole and I had a terrible backache last Wednesday. Besides, this week has been very sad due to the terrorist attacks last Thursday 11th March.

I´ve already done two thirds of my marathon training. I find a bit hard to do so many kilometres on Wednesdays and especially at the weekend owing to the lack of time and tiredness. I hope I won´t get injured and I´ll be able to take part at Madrid marathon which will have a special meaning for all of us since it will be devoted to all the victims in the terrorist attacks last Thursday. As I´ve read in other Spanish running forums, there will be black ribbons, placards and banners in solidarity with all those people who have lost their lives or been injured so unjustly.
