See QPR are tweeting about this documentary cant say i have seen it but the poster is hardly selling running.

Hmm yes, "every month someone dies running a marathon and their average age is just 33". Sounds a bundle of laughs. Smile Don't expect any content on the psychological benefits.

There are (broadly speaking) two schools of thought here.

1) No-one should undertake* strenuous physical exercise without first undergoing a rigorous and professional medical examination

2) most people

If you are in any doubt, talk to your doctor.
Otherwise, enjoy.

I always consider it a bonus to get home alive from my runs... My better half asked for my on-line banking codes on Saturday morning before I headed out to the hills (I am not joking).

I concluded that I am far more at risk at home - she can't catch me when I am on top of the Downs!

Possibly this issue of young people dropping dead during races is caused by too many people seeking fitness as a "head-in-the-sand" approach to underlying problems, i.e. fit people are sometimes prone to not getting themselves checked for congenital problems because they believe they are fit and well. In fact they are sometimes just fit, and their un-wellness is masked by their fitness which will often do nothing at all to stop a fatal episode, with a hard run perhaps being the catalyst if the problem is heart-related.

As I tell everyone who stands still long enough to listen: at the very least, know your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and blood-sugar levels. And have them checked regularly!
