Funnily enough there's a lot of similarities between Lewes and the mighty Barca. The charridy sponsorships are good publicity for the club (and of course the charities - one home kit, one away). Lewes attract paying sponsors in a variety of other ways - each match day has one, each stand has one per season (although I think the Philcox stand, the one next to the Rook Inn pub, is on a longer term deal). The ownership scheme raises a bit of dosh but more so the life members (who pay at least a grand).
Matchday revenue is modest but steady. Ten quid (owner or not) with concessions for students and OAPs, less for cup matches, kids always go free. Ladies games are free too, and Under 18's just 3 quid. We're getting +600 gates on Saturdays, with over a thousand for the Horsham match at New Year. We have excellent home-made pies and soups at two outlets in the ground and of course lovely Harveys served before, during and after the match at outr very own in-house pub, the Rook Inn.
Did you watch the Spend and Save Scheme video? If not I'll drop it in here. The voiceover is by Come Dine With Me's Dave Lamb, an ardent admirer of the Rooks. He's going to miss Wednesday's cup clash with Eastbourne Borough as he's at thye National Television Awards. He will, I'm assured, be following @Rookmeister 's updates via Twitter.
As you can probably tell I'm proud to be involved with a club doing so much to engage with the local community. It's a side to football I've missed out on. The big stuff is fine but I've never been a true fan, suffering vast treks across the European tundra to cheer on my distant heroes. A few cozy evenings at Old Trafford is about my lot.
Lewes may well fall short of promotion this year but frankly I don't care. So long as we're building sustainably for A future, getting local people involved and nurturing a reputation for good hospitality and attractive, attacking football I'll be happy.
The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph
