September 2016
At last, a return to running. Or at least, sweaty floundering, for that's where we're at.

My first run in five weeks was a euphoric, if difficult, affair. I took off around my usual route; bottom of the field (to avoid the sheep), chalk pits, woods, a stop at the water trough (for the dogs) and a run home through the field. I must have stopped at least four times, drenched in sweat, breaths coming in rattle-laced rasps. It didn't matter. I was back, and it felt GOOD.

On Tuesday I set off for the second outing. This was more typical of a return to running after a break. Pain, niggles, shortness of breath, way too hot, feelings of imminent death, that sort of thing. More stops on route, but still, a sense of satisfaction at having got out there. There's been no adverse reaction in the area of surgery, which was my main concern. So, onwards, upwards and so on. The road to Almeria starts here.

I'm very glad you're feeling well after the surgery, S., and managed to run in spite of the heat wave that was commented on the Spanish TV this evening. The hottest September in the UK in many years.

Best of luck with your training for Almería half marathon!

Enjoy the upward curve Sweder. I was in my own trough around the New Year but have managed to slowly yet surely drag myself towards something resembling running fitness. Have patience and enjoy the view.

Managed a Twitten Run on Sunday, TR number XLIII. Just me and MarcusNonTweeter.
Marcus has improved immeasurably since I last ran with him. I have, literally, gone backwards.
Being British, I apologised at every summit for holding him up. Being also British, he told me not to worry about it.

It was ugly, painful, sweaty and I lagged behind like a crippled dog, yet it pleased me no end to get round.
My glutes and hammies whined and groaned, but it's my lungs that really struggled, two tiny tattered teabags, trying to pump oxygen into me as my starved, wasted muscles screamed for fuel.

with Marcus, Keere Street

I had a go on the rowing machine on Saturday, a shiny new Concept 2, as recommended by La Grand Fromage. I'm nowehere near ready for this particular circle of hell. Two minutes in I realised the requisite 2000 metres might take me the rest of the day, so I crawled off it and quietly pulled on its cover. Another time.

Right now I just need to get out there and cover some ground. Sadly, I can cover quite a lot of ground just now, but I've made a start. The main thing is to keep going and not to push too hard too soon.

On, on ...

Mid-week solo Twitten run on Tuesday night. As tough & ugly as an east-end doorman. Chuffed that I flogged myself all the way round, albeit slower than a procrastinating sloth. Doc have me the green light this week to ramp it up - ha! - but warned me not to lift anything remotely heavy unless I want to open up like a tin of beans

Another wobbly 4.5 kilometre outing to the Chalk Pits on Saturday, followed by a debilitating Sunday Twitten session.
I confess to feeling absolutely cream-crackered this evening. I guess this is what the cusp of over-doing it feels like. I shall back off a bit. There are still plenty of weeks between here (Sloth) and there (Almeria).

Next weekend sees the Lewes Downland Ten. I've entered the 5 Mile 'race' (with a few of the Twittenistas), maybe even chucking in a pre-race Twitten session to boot. There's a thirty minute 'interlude' between finishing up at Ground Coffee and the 5 mile start ...

Ah.

What was that you were saying about not overdoing it?
