Toe Story

End of a difficult Week 7/60.

Another Horgenberg snap — Bitte nicht füttern (Please do not feed)
The bad news is that my nutritional discipline melted, just like the cheese on Wednesday’s double portion of lasagne. For the first time in six weeks, my mornings have begun with overflowing bowls of muesli, bran, banana, nuts and dried fruit. Not exactly unhealthy, and I’m still resisting lactose, moistening the mix with a splash of soya milk and a spoonful or two of yoghurt-like…. quark… thing. But a bellyful of fibre isn’t the ideal starting handle. It sets a tone for the day. It’s an ultimatum; a note shoved across the counter — Gimme more of this carby stuff, or else...

The other bit of bad news, not unrelated, is a total lack of exercise — after Monday. What happened?

After finishing that jaunt, I felt good. But next morning, I could barely walk. My left hand big toe, as it were, was swollen, and too painful to put any pressure on. It stayed like this for three days, and the physical echoes are still faintly reverberating. Whatever it was, it worried me. I sought solace in the danish pastry. At work I was ravished by a wedge of chocolate cake, and took my revenge on any pre-diet remnants discovered clinging to life at the back of the fridge. Hard cheese.

The good news? The real devil has stayed away: no alcohol, and not the slightest temptation. And despite the sugar and carb attacks, I seem to have clung onto my weight loss gains, so to speak. Surprisingly, my daily average is 0.88 pounds lower than last week.

I’m rationalising it, as one does. Nothing wrong with a step-back week once in a while.

  • I was discussing gout guidelines the other night. Have a look at these: http://www.rheumatology.org/practice/clinical/guidelines/gout.asp The British ones (http://www.rheumatology.org.uk/resources/guidelines/bsr_guidelines.aspx) are being revised too, should be out soon. The day after was all about pelvic pain and vaginal discharge. Something for everyone

  • So .. what’s occurring?

  • I hope it’s not gout :O

Funnily (or not) enough I’ve also had a poor dietary week, coincidentally also my 6th week of abstainance. No beer, no bread but chips the other night (with a thick juicy steak) and a few too many Mochas. Weight loss has halted (reversed slightly if I’m honest). This all coincided with my evil chest and a lack of exercise. That body is well and truly buried and I’m back on the trails and into the daily workouts. Time to toe the line, get back on the horse, blah blah blah …

Speaking of bodies, The magnificent Lund returns on Saturday night in Forbrydelsen III. Not to be missed.

  • Mid Life Crisis Man

Hang in there mate, you’ll be right. Doesn’t sound too serious. A step-back week or two never hurt anyone.

  • It feels fine at the moment. I’m not even sure if it qualifies as an injury — it felt very much like gout, which I’ve not had for a few years. I’ve been thinking about it, and reckon that the recent change of running style, which puts much more impact on the front and midfoot, might well have something to do with it.

Anyway, one week on, there is just a distant twinge left, so time to get out there again.

Latest: no cakes or naughty things for 3 days, so things seem to be back on track. But off to the UK this evening for a few days, so need to be vigilant.

  • I like the idea of a step-back week in a diet plan. We have them in running plans to avoid over-stressing the running muscles. No reason not to have them in a diet plan, to avoid over-stressing the self-discipline muscles.

Best wishes for a toe-tal recovery.

Sorry, it sounds pretty nasty. Hopefully it’s just a one-off random injury.

  • Sometimes it is necessary to change the healthy diet a little to restart more motivated. I’ve gained half a kilo this week but I intend to lose a little this week.

Get better from your swollen toe and ongratulations on succeeding in being on the wagon, Andy!
