This is amazing. It works for road runs wherever Google maps has coverage:

Here's my run today (zoom out to see the full route and location):

Now draw your own - just double-click each point en route. Happy running!

Thanks for the link, Nigel. I used to do something similar with Autoroute before the days of my distance monitor gadgets, but I much prefer the 3D quality of Google Maps. My only grumble with them when it comes to driving is that they don't have motorway junctions. For running, they are great for roads but footpaths and canals are not marked.

I just checked my run this evening, and it comes out just about exactly the same as my Forerunner reading.

Stop press: I had a vague feeling that I'd seen the link before, and after a search, sure enough Tim mentioned it a while ago. Thanks both.

I tried several of my normal routes but they all come out slightly shorter than my garmin reading, must be because I always run around the back of cars when I'm crossing roads ;-)

Hey Andy
I found that you can use it for off-road runs, too - well, almost.

Just zoom out two steps from the view I've shown above, and then click 'satellite' (top right) and then 'hybrid'. These will give you a view of your run onto a pretty good quality landsat image, with or without the street names to orient you.

It's not perfect, but it can help you to bridge the off-road links, paths and tracks on your runs.

For much better images, Google Earth does a brilliant job, but as far as I know that doesn't do routes yet.
