Running Goals

You're exactly correct when it comes to goals. For years I considered myself a decent runner, and would frequently do hard trail runs upwards of 10 miles. But I would fluctuate between mediocrity and commitment. Then a friend challenged me to run my first marathon. I went from one goal to another and found renewed focus and direction in my running. From the first marathon, to dropping my half marathon time, then several attempts at a sub 4 marathon, etc. So I'd highly suggest you stick to those goals. The satisfaction of reaching them is a great reward, but the journey there is just as much, if not more, rewarding.
My wife has tasked me with qualifying for Boston. At my age, I'd have to run a 3:10, which seems like a world away. I guess that's my 55th year goal...when it drops to a more reasonable 3:45...haha
