Old Men Running
First event of the new era; Ponferada 10k road race.

4 Old Men Running signed up for 10k around the streets of Ponferrada under the cover of darkness. Proceeds of the race go to the substance abuse rehabilitation centre “Proyecto Hombre” which does a fine job in this area.

The turnout was poor however. The first decent snowfall had covered many of the surrounding hills during the week and there was a vicious chill in the air. And there were divisions in the new team from the very start. Oscar and Terry M. chose to warm up outside while me and Rolly enjoyed the warmth of the sports centre and watched a game of basketball. Oscar even decided to line up at the front with the proper runners. I’m beginning to doubt his commitment to the project.

The course was a gut buster with a couple of short, sharp hills to break the rhythm but I must admit I thoroughly enjoyed it. The 200 or so runners taking part didn’t really justify closing off roads on a Saturday night and pissing off the drivers trying to get from one side of the town to the other but it felt great and more than a little self indulgent to have the streets to ourselves.

And it was a successful first meeting for the new team.

Roland was 3rd in the over-60 category, an excellent achievement for the man from Amsterdam. Unfortunately the podium was placed in a particularly cold and exposed spot so Rolly didn’t even leave the comfort of Terry M’s Jag to collect his prize. Wild Oscar unsurprisingly achieved the fastest time. I was more than happy to get around in less than 50 minutes and so was Tery who was running his first ever race.

Next “happening” Villablino Trail race, 1 week ago, oops…

Thank you Antonio, the Villablino trail was a couple of weeks ago but I just haven't written about it yet. I will, because it was a decent little race!

RE: Old Men Running
Villablino trail
A week to recover after a muscle battering road race and in quick succession a 10k off road race, a no-nonsense, up-down affair with the descent somewhat steeper than the climb.  I liked the look of it.

Villablino is a suitable location, a once thriving mining outpost now in decadence, last call up the Sil valley before the limestone mountains of Babia and gateway to the steep alpine pastures of Asturias. There has been very little mountain running activity in this area over the years and I have often wondered why.

The race first appeared on the calendar 3 years ago. Having missed it last year due to injury problems I was determined to make it this time even though it was only a week after the Ponferrada 10k. I wasn’t to be disappointed.

Teamed up with a rejuvenated Wild Oscar for the 1 hour drive. On a dull day this can be a grim journey for some, mining paraphernalia litters the roadside, crumbling cottages, steaming slagheaps, the final chapter of a familiar story for mining communities everywhere. In fact this week the last working coal mine in El Bierzo officially ceased production and the 5 miners on the last shift marched up and down the murky tunnel one last time.

Villablino has lost perhaps half of its population over 20 years. Agriculture and tourism offer less lucrative alternatives for the miners’ children who stay on.
Great place for a mountain race though!

There was a similar turnout to the Ponferrada 10k but with a more specialist field from a wider catchment area. They came from Leon, Asturias, Galicia and even the Basque provinces. There was a world champion in our midst too, the local runner Merillas, one of the few mountain runners to have beaten Kilian Jornet at Zegama.

Enjoyed the race. Climbed surprisingly well along trails marked in places by the snowfall of the previous week. Descended comfortably at first but a slight twist to my right ankle sent out a warning that I still need to be careful. Once we left the more technical sections I could stretch my legs again and finished in 64 minutes, pushing myself into mid-field respectability, a rare achievement for me these days.

Hot chocolate and prizes in the local sports hall afterwards. There were local meat and dairy products a plenty for the winners of the various categories, although none for us! No matter, it had been fun and a good workout.

Some nice photos here, only a couple of them mine…

Next race on the agenda, 4 years after our last appearance, the famous Dragoman race from the castle of Villafranca to the village of Dragonte. The only way is up…

There's life in the old dog yet! Well done!

Amazing picture of the coal trucks on the news site you linked to.

Dragoman 2018 (Villafranca to Dragonte)

Dragonte revisited 4 years after the last time. But it’s always a pleasure to be here and it’s a very special occasion for so many reasons.

Maybe you remember it. It’s the uphill only road race organized by the Ultra running butcher who several years ago somehow persuaded one of Spain’s most illustrious 20th century composers to open up his castle to a bunch of sweaty runners, some of them in bizarre fancy dress. The unlikely composer-butcher double act has created something unique,  “The Dragoman”.
  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crist%C3%B3bal_Halffter

Sadly, Halffter’s wife, a renowned concert pianist herself, passed away a few weeks after last year’s race and a memorial plaque is revealed just before the start.

There was a slightly smaller turnout than usual, maybe because an off-road Dragoman had been organized the day before. But with many familiar faces it almost felt like some big family get-together.

The Old Men Running team was out in full force, this time accompanied by Manny the Canadian moose who set off half an hour earlier with the walkers. Manny had promised to take photos of us as we toiled and grimaced our way up the slopes.

The first 3k sent us through the village of Villafranca del Bierzo and then through a section of tunnel which passes directly under the enormous hill we have to climb. 5km of constant ascent followed with the gradient almost always above 10%. This year I’d practiced my run-walk technique and it got me to the top a couple of minutes quicker than 4 years ago when I’m sure I had spent more time running.

My race compañeros all produced good times, Roland, the Flying Dutchman just missing out   on the veteran C over-60s podium. There had been a late influx of entries from super fit senior citizens and our man had to settle for 4th place. Seriously though, these guys never cease to amaze me and motivate me to keep on running for as long as possible.

So ends the 2018 running season, hampered initially by injury and all sorts of doubts but with far more optimism in the home straight. Hopefully there’s more to come.. Smile

Nice work, BB. Room for optimism indeed. I kept reading 'Halffter' as 'Hatlifter', probably because it's the name of a rather good stout from around these parts. Not the sort of thing to run an uphill race on ... although, then again ...
Run. Just run.
