I found that you can use it for off-road runs, too - well, almost.
Just zoom out two steps from the view I've shown above, and then click 'satellite' (top right) and then 'hybrid'. These will give you a view of your run onto a pretty good quality landsat image, with or without the street names to orient you.
It's not perfect, but it can help you to bridge the off-road links, paths and tracks on your runs.
For much better images, Google Earth does a brilliant job, but as far as I know that doesn't do routes yet.
