Blisters!
Does anyone know a way how I can prevent blisters? I've had the same pair of running shoes for about a year and I got a size bigger because my toenails used to go black and fall off. The problem I have now is even running for half an hour gives me blisters on the arches of both feet, some people have said vaseline is good but I was wondering if anyone knows of anything better?

Compeed plasters do it for me, they stay on even in the bath - sometimes even when there's water in it. Rolleyes Not cheap but well worth it.

And shoes a year old? Eek Sounds like the shoe is too big and your foot is moving inside. 1/2 a size bigger I'd have thought was more the norm. Raizor Blue is our resident shoe expert though.

Believe it or not, I've used duct tape for a couple of marathons - never got a blister! Although I didn't have to put it under my arches, that might be a little different.

If your shoes are a size bigger, that suggests that your feet are moving around in them as you run, which could well be the cause of the blisters. So you need shoes that fit properly.

I don't use Vaseline. Too messy, and it wears off. But it does work reasonably well. I prefer the drier things like Bodyglide. But what really worked for after I had bad blister problems when training for the FLM in 2002, was switching socks. I bought a couple of pairs of Thorlos which are padded and very comfy, and seemed to help me get rid of the blister problem.

because the shoes aren't quite wide enough for you? If you bought them from a reliable specialist shop I don't suppose that can be the problem?

You might also try twin skin socks, I love them, haven't had any blisters since I switched.

A particularly delicate footed female friend of mine swears by them coupled with a liberal helping of vaseline on the vunerable bits.

Always use a fabric softener, or liquid Fairy (not the powder).

Then make sure you dry your socks in the tumble dryer rather than letting them dry naturally in the air.

That's the route to softer socks, oh yes.
