Brighton 10K, November 19 2006
Thanks to Nigel for reminding me that it's that Brighton time of year again.
The Brighton 10K starts in Madeira Drive, Brighton at 11:00 on the 19th November. It's a very flat and fast race, an out-and-back along the seafront.
A few of us met up last year to do the race, followed by a most agreeable luncheon overlooking the sea. I'm up for it again this year.
It's a popular race and ALWAYS sells out well in advance.

Any other takers?

Umm . . . eh? Oh, sorry . . . were you talkin' to me?
Well, yes, I suppose I could stretch to a 10k in November . . .
It was a good day - not too much strenuous exercise and just the right amount of food and beer. I seem to remember a little aprés lunch pub-style footie-watching on the schedule last year, too . . .
A fair few of the JSJs are likely to be about. It would be great if we could persuade a few more -
Nigel, Dan, LJS . . . it's a family type deal, nice restaurant (actually SP pointed out there's equally good fare to be had nearby at Monroe's) . . . Sussex-by-the-sea and all that.
And unless you listen to Nigel there's absolutely no hills involved
Speaking of revisting old races, any thoughts towards Almería for 2007?

I'd expect Nigel to join us in Brighton, as he first mentioned it.
Almeria 2007? Hmmm. Now then, here I have something of a dilemma. I'd really like to go again. But..... but I'm entertaining this rather bizarre possibility of not drinking any alcohol between now and April.
Shocking I know, and probably just a pipedream. But I do know that much as I enjoyed Almeria this year, it was quite a setback in my training. I'd spent 6 weeks or so building up to a real head of steam, then Almeria happened and it sort of punctured my self-discipline for a while. Took me a long time to regain the momentum -- if indeed I ever did. It's made me do quite a bit of thinking about Almeria 2007. Should I do it? Should I go but not party? Could I go and not party? I have my doubts. I know myself too well. Anyway, no decision yet on that one for me.

Interesting. I see the virtue in laying off the beer - it's one of the quickest ways to shed poundage for us regular imbibers. Paradoxically beer, at least the black variety, is now integral to my weekly training. Tomorrow night I'm meeting up with a mate in London for a 'controlled session'. It may all be bollocks but I do see improvement in my Sunday performances after a few pints of Guinness on the Friday.
Almería without the partying?
It's possible. You managed to abstain until after the race this year (though the wagon was well and truly wheel-less 24 hours later). A half and several days 'rack and ruin' is not ideal eight weeks out. Perhaps we should organise our own hilly half on the same day? A flog round the Jog Shop Jog route would be good prep for those Cape Town climbs.

Now you're talking.
I've always wanted to sample some of BB's regular runs. As you say, best to see what TOM has in store before enrolling on the good ship Further Ambition, but all things being equal I would love to do the Travesía Integral de los Montes Aquiianos one day . . .

It would be great if you could come to Almería half again although I can understand if you can´t come again. Anyway, as soon as I know the date I´ll tell you just in case you can come again or other forumites feel like coming.
It would be wonderful to go to Brighton and take part at a race there or in a hilly training designed by Sweder and his mates such as the famous "Snake".
I´d love to go to Brighton 10 km or half marathon in February but I don´t know if I´ll be able to go.
Greetings from Almería

andy Wrote:There's something peculiarly... pointless about the Brighton 10K, but it's still worth doing. Yes, mass participation 10Ks can be rather frustrating, as the majority of energy is expended in the elbows. However, I have a theory that in such a short race, pace isn't that important - it should be possible to make up for an enforced slow start, or conversely going off too fast shouldn't be too much of a problem. (The latter is my preferred strategy.)
andy Wrote:I hope you'll join us for lunch? Partners and kiddies welcome. That's the plan - No. 1 will be hyper, No. 2 will be on solids by then, missus will be frazzled. I might just go and run the course again, it will be more relaxing.
